BACK PAIN

A healthy pain free back requires a supple, balanced spine.

Pain results when the vertebrae are subjected to stress; this can be from injury, overuse or in the form of a ‘pull’ from surrounding tight muscles. The vertebrae are subjected to an overload which results in further muscular spasm or vertebrae rotation and, at worst, disc prolapse (“slipped disc”).

The ongoing discomfort forces our bodies to adapt by altering our posture. This may give some temporary relief between episodes of pain. However, in the longrun this compensation causes further stress to build up in another part of the spine. Episodes of pain become more frequent, the nerve supply to other parts of the body may be affected giving symptoms such as sciatic pain in the legs, numbness/tingling in the arms - even organ function can be affected.

Further stress and adaptive posture eventually results in joint degeneration and ultimately painful arthritis.

THE SOLUTION

Keep the joints supple and balance out postural stresses with the appropriate strengthening exercises, good corrective stretches, massage and dynamic musclework therapy.

An athlete will put in hours of training to support and balance their body to make it capable of high sporting performance, yet we may spend even more hours at a desk or at a repetitive task without any preparation or taking any compensatory measures. It is essential we take our health seriously and allow time for self maintenance.
